In this very special program, one of the world’s foremost cultural anthropologists and educators, Mary Catherine Bateson, explores how the family can no longer be seen as a familiar, reliable refuge from the confusions and ambiguities of a rapidly changing multicultural society.
She examines three factors that have emerged to make family life more unpredictable than ever before, but that also make the family an appropriate setting for learning to cope in society. These factors include the loosening of traditional roles, rapid social change requiring lifelong learning, and the growing belief in shared decision-making among all household members.
The Smithsonian’s John P. McGovern Behavioral Science Award is presented to Dr. Bateson, in recognition of her contributions to furthering our understanding of American family life. The prize and medal come from an endowment by Dr. McGovern, a world-renowned allergist and humanitarian who made a gift to the Smithsonian for these purposes in 1988.
