Johnnetta Cole is president emerita of Spelman College and Presidential Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, Women's Studies, and African American Studies at Emory University. In recognition of her contributions to furthering our understanding of American family life, Dr. Cole is presented the Smithsonian's John P. McGovern Behavioral Science Award. After presentation of the award to Dr. Cole, she shares her vision of what family means in contemporary American society. She maintains that there are now many instances in which biologically unrelated individuals interact as a family. She also offers examples of individuals who, although biologically related, exhibit behavior toward each other that is anithetical to accepted societal notions of family, citing cases of domestic violence, incest, child abuse and neglect of the elderly. This program was recorded December 8, 1999 at the Smithsonian Institution | ||
