Robert McNamara (Secretary of Defense 1961-68) is a man of prodigious energy and his long, outstanding career is one of considerable achievement. During World War II, he served as a statistical control officer in the Army Air Forces and was awarded the Legion of Merit. A brilliant 15 year career at Ford Motor Company led him to the top of the corporate ladder where, in late 1960, he became the first president of Ford not a member of the Ford family. Mr. McNamara was pursued by then president-elect John F. Kennedy for a position on his cabinet. He served as Secretary of Defense under both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations and is, to this day, considered one of the most effective secretaries to serve in the postition. Mr. McNamara distinguished himself as president of the World Bank (1969-1981), where he shaped policies of aid to developing countries that have had a lasting effect. He has since served on a number of boards of directors for both corporations and non-profit associations. He writes and speaks on many topics; in this lecture, he analyzes U.S. defense policy and proposes a strategy for achieving a non-nuclear world.
