Walter Mosley

Author Walter Mosley is a native of Los Angeles, the setting for his Easy Rawlins mystery series. His first novel, Devil in a Blue Dress, received immediate acclaim in 1990 and was the winner of the Shamus Award for Best First P.I. Novel from The Private Eye Writers of America. It also became a major motion picture staring Denzel Washington and Jennifer Beals. Other books in the series include A Red Death, White Butterfly, and Black Betty.

During the 1992 Presidential campaign then-candidate Bill Clinton, an avid reader of mysteries, revealed that the Easy Rawlins series was his favorite.

On this audio program, Mr. Mosley discusses the importance of black male heroes in literature and illustrates his analysis by reading one of his short stories featuring his new character, Socrates Fortlow.

This program was recorded December 5, 1994 at the Smithsonian Institution.
